Our story on La Palma
Our connection to La Palma began in 2007, when Torsten fell in love with the island during a vacation. He quickly decided to build a second home here and bought a house with two apartments at the foot of Montaña Rajada. He lived there for four and a half years with his two daughters and his then partner and looked after vacation guests on the island. After the separation, we went back to Germany, where our paths crossed.
Without realizing it, Britta and her son became part of the vacation rental business in 2012. From then on, as a patchwork family, we spent our vacations and working hours at Camino Montaña Rajada 16.
The volcanic eruption
When the volcanic eruption began, our house was one of the first to be destroyed by the lava. We, Torsten and Britta with our daughter Lotta, were in Germany at the time and were stunned to see from afar how our home was overrun by the volcano. We were in Husum on business and wanted to have a quick fish sandwich before driving to Hanover - a moment we will probably never forget.
All we had left was our car, which happened to be in the garage, and some towels that our housekeeper still had with her. But the memories of the good times remain, especially for Lina and Paula, who spent their childhood here.
In hindsight, we were lucky in misfortune: just two hours after the eruption, our house disappeared under the lava. While many residents of the Aridane Valley were still worried and trying to save their belongings, we found what is now Casa Jardín Tropical. The previous owner wanted to leave the island due to the volcanic eruption - for us, this was a chance for a fresh start.
Casa Jardín Tropical
The property that we now call our own used to be a farm with orange, banana and avocado plantations. The current guest house was once a cattle shed and the terrace was used as a threshing floor where corn was threshed.
Since 2022, we have been working on transforming the house and garden into a tropical paradise. A lot of ash has been shoveled - some of it is still visible. But our garden is far from finished. We spend every free minute of our vacation time developing it further and enriching it with new ideas.
Our garden and the estate are still in a state of flux - but that's what makes this place so lively. It will be interesting to see what ideas we put into practice in the future. We hope you enjoy your stay in this historic property!
We look forward to seeing you! Get in touch with us - we will be happy to help you and look forward to welcoming you to Casa Jardín Tropical soon.
